DIAMOND HAD HER BILATERAL HIP SURGERY ON 12/7/06
SEE UPDATE BELOW

Diamond is a Black Female Great Dane
She is fully sighted and hears fine.
Diamond is one year old.
Diamond is spayed
Diamond was surrendered by her previous owners to a Veterinary Clinic in Dayton Ohio after being diagnosed with severe
hip dysplasia. Diamond was originally rescued by another Ohio Rescue
but the rescue lost the foster home that Diamond was staying in and CODA was contacted
to see is we would be able to take Diamond into our program

Diamond arrived at CODA on Sunday June 11th 2006
Diamond will be fostering at one of our Northfield Ohio Foster Homes
Diamond has already had xrays of her hips, legs and paws

Diamond cannot run or walk well due to the pain caused by her hip dysplasia
Diamonds right hip is in the worse condition. Her left hip is also very bad
Diamond has difficulty getting in and out of cars or walking up or down stairs
Our Northfield foster home has no stairs and Great Dane experience and Diamond is settling in well
and getting along fine with her foster fur brother Skittles and her foster fur sister Magic

Diamond is a sweet typical, loving dane girl who loves to give head rubs
likes to lean and Diamond loves children and is fine with other dogs
Diamond is housebroken and crate trained
Diamond is going to make someone a wonderful companion once she is ready for adoption

Diamond knows many basic commands such as sit, heel, lay, down, come etc.
Diamond is wonderful with the 12 year old child at her foster home.

Diamond walks pretty well on a leash and rides great in a car.
Diamond is up to date on all her vaccinations and is spayed
Diamond is a very lovable Dane Girl who loves to lean, cuddle and get rubbed behind her ears.

UPDATE 6/12/06
Dr. Brian examined Diamond's xrays today and referred us to an orthopedic specialist
Dr. Brian felt the surgery that was suggested by the Toledo OH vet who x-ray'd and examined Diamond
several months ago, would probably not have a great success rate.
Dr. Brian explained to us that the surgery has a great success rate for dogs weighing under 50 lbs but is not
very successful in dogs the size of Great Danes. Diamonds left hip is not in great shape either so by having surgery
it will put more stress on her left hip and in all probability cause more damage to the left hip
We have an appointment for a consultation with the specialist on June 20th.
Cost of consultation with the specialist will be $102
UPDATE 6/20/06
Diamond was examined today by Veterinary Orthopedic Specialist Dr. James Vogt DVM
Dr. Vogt examined Diamond's xrays and we learned that Diamond had a toe fracture when she was 4 months old that never healed quite right on her right front paw.
Dr. Vogt stated that Diamond has hip displasia in both hips and since arthritic changes have already occured to both hip sockets
Diamond is not a candidate for the surgery the Toledo Veterinary Clinic had suggested
Since Diamond just turned a year old she still has another year of growing to do which will most likely affect the condition/development of her hip dysplasia.
Dr. Vogt feels she may be a good candidate for a more intricate surgery that would require unilateral hip surgeries ( Surgery on BOTH of her hips)
But due to her age Dr. Vogt feels it's best to wait a few months and see how things develop as she grows to her full mature size
So Diamond will need to see Dr. Vogt again in a few months for new x-rays and to see how things are progressing.
Diamond was a very good girl for her exam with Dr. Vogt.

UPDATE 10/5/06
Diamond has been doing well behaviourally in her foster home and loves her foster mom and her foster kid A.J.
Diamond is having difficulty lately getting up and down from her orthopedic bed or up onto the couch in her foster home
She initially wasn't having as severe a problem as she's presented with the past few weeks
Diamond is scheduled for her second visit with the orthopedic specialist on 10/20/06

UPDATE 10/20/06
Diamond had her appointment with Dr. Vogt today
Diamond actually has developed better muscle control and posture since seeing her 4 months ago.
We've had her sleeping on a 8" thick orthopedic bed and on regimented
daily walks to build up her muscles in preparation for her hip surgery
She's also on a special diet to keep her lean and supplemented with glucosamine
Dr Vogt discussed our options for Diamond and surgery is required on
both of Diamonds hip sockets as soon as possible to ease her pain and give her a good quality of life
Her right hip was even worse at this visit than at the first exam so time is of the essence in
getting Diamond's hip surgery
Total hip replacement was the other option but much more costly and since her replacements would require cementing due to her size, the replacements would not last for the remainder
of her life and Dr. Vogt thought the femural socket surgery would be the best option for
Diamond to ease all her pain and give her the best quality of life possible so she can walk, move, run and get up and down without pain and discomfort.
Estimated cost of
bilateral hip surgery for Diamond

$3200-$3400

ALL FUNDS RAISED FOR DIAMONDS SURGERY

Diamonds Surgery is scheduled for Thursday Dec 7th at 9 am.

Please keep Diamond in your thoughts and prayers as she goes through her surgery and recovery.

UPDATE 12.7.06

Diamond had her surgery today and is in recovery and doing well.
Dr. Vogt stated that the arthritic damage was worse than he thought it was going to be but that the surgery went well.
Diamond came out of the anethesia fine and then they sedated her to ease the pain.

Dr. Vogt said her total recovery time may be up to six months but that after the first few days we need to get her up
and moving around for short walks and increase the length of walking periods as she gains more muscle tone and the pain diminishes from the surgery.

So......so far everything is going well.
Other than freezing temperatures and way too much lake effect snow here in Cleveland.
Thank you everyone for everything you've done in order for this day to arrive for Diamond.
She was being silly this morning and while we were waiting for the office staff at the Clinic to buzz us in,
Diamond started knocking on the door with her paw.
The office staff laughed and said most dogs aren't so anxious to come in our doors:)
Then Diamond proceeded to stand up on her bad hips and put her front paws on the counter
so she could attempt to give the office staff some sloppy dane kisses to say hello.

We'll be calling Dr. Vogt about 9 in the morning to see how she's doing
and she's expected to be able to return to her foster home around 1 pm tomorrow.

UPDATE 12.8.06

Diamond is recovering back at her foster home in Northfield Ohio
Diamond is not able to stand or walk on her own
We had to carry Diamond from the CODA van into her foster home
with the aid of the towel sling you can see in the photo above
Diamond is on heavy pain medication but did eat for her foster mom this evening
Diamond has been refusing water but we were able to get her to eat a small amount of ice today

Diamond has identical incisions on both her left and right hip where the operation was performed to repair her hips
Diamond was very happy to see us this morning when we picked her up at the clinic
Diamond was especially happy to see her foster mom Rose and started wagging her tail even through all the pain
the minute she saw Rose
Diamond is resting well and her foster mom plans on sleeping next to Diamond tonight incase she tries to get up
and so that she can be turned over every few hours to prevent any bed sores from developing
Diamond must have been a bit worried about her surgery because the day before surgery she shredded
her very expensive 8 inch thick orthopedic bed we bought for her to help pre and post surgery

So we are hurrying to try to get a new orthopedic 8 inch thick dane sized bed pad for Diamond
because she really needs to be sleeping on one during her recovery from the surgery
We had a few patio cushions handy and Diamond is currently resting on those until her new bed arrives
Diamond's foster mom is applying ice packs to the incision area for the first 48 hrs of recovery
and then will be applying heat packs for the next 48 hrs of her recovery
We expect Diamond to be immobilized for the next four days before she is started on a regimine of short walks
to help rebuild her muscle tone in her rear legs and hip areas.
Please send good thoughts to Diamond for a quick and speedy recovery
Special thanks to Moira (little Abbigails new mom) for helping us today to get Diamond back to her foster home on such short notice!
UPDATE 12.10.06
Diamond's foster mom reported today that Diamond continues to eat well but is still refusing water
Diamond also attempted to walk a bit today once her foster Mom and Foster kid A.J. helped her stand up to go outside to potty
with the assistance of the towel sling
Diamond was able to eliminate urine today without any problems
Diamond has licked some ice today but is refusing to drink water so far
Diamond is staying calm and resting other than when she is helped up to turn over or go outside to potty
Diamonds foster fur siblings are giving her space and letting her rest and recover
UDPATE 12.13.06
Diamond is recovery miraculously well. Diamond is able to stand up from a laying position on her own without assistance
and is also able to walk without the assistance of the towel sling already.
Diamond continues to eat well and will be going off her heavier pain medication tonight.
Diamond's new orthopedic bed arrived at her foster home today so she'll be sleeping in comfort tonight
Diamonds first follow up vist with Dr. Vogt is scheduled for January 4th
We are so pleased with Diamonds recovery so far.
Thanks to everyone who helped to make a pain free life possible for Diamond
We expect in a few months she'll be running and playing like a one year old should be doing
UPDATE 1.04.07
Diamond had her first follow up visit with Dr. Vogt today
Diamond was restless in her foster moms SUV driving to the visit
Diamond pee'd on Dr. Vogt when he was working on her stretching out her hip muscles
Dr. Vogt required a clothing change after Diamonds visit today
Dr Vogt felt Diamond was doing well and suggested an exercise regimine of 3-5 short walks per day on hard pavement
for about 5 minute time frames for each walk
Dr. Vogt also suggested daily massage on her hips to help loosen up her muscles
Dr. Vogt also said we could start Diamond on a buffered aspirin to ease any soreness in the evenings after her daily walks
Diamond is very thin right now so Dr. Vogt felt it was fine to increase her food intake now that the first few weeks post surgery
have passed as those were the toughest weeks of her recovery
Diamond has her next follow up visit with Dr. Vogt on 2.13.07
Diamond is eating and drinking water well and having no problems with elimination

We had a surprise in the CODA van for Diamond today
A dane sized orthopedic foam pad/bed that has heat and massage functions built in with variable settings
We convinced Diamond to lay on the new massaging dog bed for the ride home to make her more comfortable and less restless
SPECIAL THANKS TO DIAMONDS FOSTER MOM ROSE
For everything you are doing for Diamond
It's very obvious that Diamond very much LOVES her foster mom:)

UPDATE 5/1/07
Diamond continues to well in her recovery. Diamond is able to run although still doing a bunny hopping motion
with her rear end when running we were able to determine from this photo taken of her in action that she is actually
alternating weight on her rear legs

Diamond's hips look so much different from the rear view compared to the rear view photo taken
the morning of her surgery

Diamond is definately on the mend and coming around wonderfully

Diamond can easily get up from a sitting position now.

That is Diamonds foster fur sister Magic in the background
Here is a better photo of Magic:)
